Is it possible to be a paralegal if you have a criminal record?

I am interested in being a paralegal but I have a criminal record. I know that you cannot be an attorney if you have a criminal record unless your civil rights have been restored. I am just wondering if the same applies to paralegals. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Yes. I work for a lawyer and I know he didn;t do a background check on me when he hired me

Yes, unless you work for a firm that does a background check or has specific requirements for the job.

I am a Paralegal with over 7 years of experience in different legal sectors and know that you should be able to obtain employment – even with a criminal record – if you were to work in a firm where background checks are not required. Typically you will find that smaller firms do not utilize background checks as a part of their hiring process, however, you will be hardpressed to find employment in the corporate sector or with a group of any size, as most times they do conduct background checks.

Furthermore, many firms require that you hold license as a Notary Public – something that you cannot obtain with a felony record, unless of course that record has been expunged, you have received a Pardon or you have received a certificate of good conduct from your State Department.

Be sure to check into all of the criteria surrounding the position for which you are applying before submitting your application.

Above all … don’t be discouraged. It may not be entirely easy – but the Paralegal field is one that is highly rewarding both financially and personally. You will find yourself very happy in the end – should you pursue a career as a Paralegal.

    BEST OF LUCK TO YOU!!
